McAuliffe Weapon

What weapon(s) did Anthony McAuliffe jump with on D-Day and Market Garden?

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

Can't currently assist with the weapon but I know that although he jumped into Normandy , he was glider borne into Holland.

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

I'll second that Kev, the other thing to consider is that for Normandy and Market garden he was in command of the 101st Airborne's artillery . In all likely hood, besides his personal sidearm, he probably would have carried a carbine, maybe folding stock, maybe not. I know there are other senior officers in the 101st and the 82 who carried M1's. But I haven't found anything so far to suggest he did.

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

What about arming him with an M-3 Grease Gun?

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

For Market Garden I think you could do that and no one could say you were wrong. DDay I think the Thompson was still the standard SMG for Airborne. Of course being a senior officer usually means you can get away with being different. I don't know off hand which version of the grease gun was available during DDay.

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

I think you might find an M1A1 Carbine more likely for a high ranking officer than an smg, but have not been able to find any pics of him armed - only one of him addressing troops before emplaning for Market Garden

Re: McAuliffe Weapon

I may just go with the standard M-1 carbine.
