Sd Kfz 250 rifle racks

Hi Guys,

Here is the rifle rack I made this after noon. I made one last night but I wasn't happy with it so I started over. As soon as it's painted I'll add Faux or real Leather to the mounts depending on what's thinner. I ran out of bold details so I have to get to the hobby shop in the morning. The front mount is hinged and opens down so the rifles can be removed. It had a latch with a catch attached with a chain. Here are some pics as well as the real thing as reference. The more I read and from pics I keep getting every day I need to add more detail. I got the 250 from Militaria "Wydawnnictwo Publishing" Sd Kfz 250 #173 Vol 1 today and there are a few good pics I can use to add more detail to my 250. I really wanted to get this done faster but every time I look at a pic I see something else to add. LOL

Very, very nice John. Will you be making any sets for the masses? Have pity on those of us with no skill.

Thanks Guys,

I do most of this by eye. I can look at something and use other items as a reference for size. With the rack I just grabbed a DML rifle and laid it out on paper and made some marks to go from after I laid the paper out in the 250 to see if it would work and then adjusted it from there. I used the butt stock and traced it four times on the paper to get the width and length of the part to hold that end. I did do a drawing of the pieces I added measurements they are not 100% but they give you a good idea. If I ever get the time I'll make a better one. I still need to make one for the working three bolt latch I made for the rear door. I think I used an 1/8" drill bit for the six holes in the rear part of the rack. the smaller dots are where the bolts need to go. A made the hinge the same way as I show in the tutorial I posted just much smaller. The latch is just a small piece of plastic with a tiny hole drilled in it and the catch is a piece of wire bent around a nail to make the eye and the chain is a piece of old necklace. Now I can't tell you the thickness of the plastic I just used scrap pieces in the bottom of the box. The hinged piece is a Plastuct structural piece I had laying around. Once you put it in place it has to be adjusted so it sits right because of the angles of the interior.

Re: Sd Kfz 250 rifle racks

Wow that was a while ago! LOL I forgot about posting the rifle rack I scratchbuilt. It's been a while since i have seen my 250 she's been sitting in storage for a couple years now. Still needs a couple details and paint. I think I'll dig it out as soon as my buildings are done.
