Dio- Stalingrad "...the stars they are so close..." 2/2/1943

“…the stars they are so close…”
Stalingrad
February 2, 1943

This is a repost of this dio I made in 2005.
69 years ago today the Battle of Stalingrad ended…

This Dio was inspired by the last scene of the movie “Stalingrad”

I stopped the DVD until I think I got the pose as close as possible.
In the final scene these two soldiers know they are about to die and start reminiscing about their hot days out in the desert while serving in Africa.
This final scene is amazing.
First the officer, the figure prone on the frozen ground, dying and then the enlisted man dies with the officer on his lap.
As the titles start to appear the scene continues and the snow starts to accumulate over the dead frozen bodies.
Repainted the faces to give them “cold burn” and made the snow by spraying hair spray and rubbing in baking soda. The boots we covered with strips of cloth. Heavily weathered everything with washes and dry-brushing.

Very, very well done, I don't remember seeing this piece in the past so it's all new to me. Everything is dead on from the snow, the almost frostbitten/burned faces, the little drop of melted snow running down the face, you know and they know they will be frozen to death in no time juts by the feel of the piece even if you never saw the movie.

Fantastic, as usual, Eduardo! That's one of my favorite WW2 films.

Wow! Thanks for sharing.

Those pictures are incredible. The stacks of frozen bodies, alongside the stacks of abandoned vehicles and equipment, is quite a poignant scene. Really highlights the complete disconnect between the men fighting in the Stalingrad pocket and the higher-ups who made the decision to abandon them, all in the name of Hitler's inane "no retreat" policy.
