Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Dragon Models USA have just announced a 1/6 Sherman Firefly Kit!

Dragon Models USA - 1/6 Sherman Mk.Ic "Firefly" Hybrid (Model Kit)

Only 1 picture currently:

Let's hope there will be more info soon. This does appear to be a regular kit so I wonder if DML will introduce a DX13 version, possibly with a British tankcrew? I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Hip Hip Hurray for DML!

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Magnificent news! I'm sure it will be popular with both armor modelers and the 1/6th community. Great to see DML is still in the 1/6th game. Considering the Firefly's popularity on 1/35 scale websites, I'm guessing they are marketing to that demographic pretty hard.

I want the tank kit, but I have read that the Firefly used the M4A4 hull primarily.

the DML firefly based on the M4 with composite hull. if you modify the turret and change the gun and some other parts you have a standard M4 composite used by many allied nations. lower hull can be used for M4 and M4a1.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

The M4A4 hull was the more common Firefly, but there was a version that used the composite hull. I'm sure Dragon opted for this so they could use their existing hull instead of having to make molds for the longer M4A4. I am going to have to start saving some pennies. I missed out on the first Sherman offering.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Just got a smoking deal on the original kit but will have to pony up and get this as well. I have wanted a tank from the major players of WWII and this will make for an excellent Brit tank. Nice to see that the BIG D is still making some 1/6 vehicles. Great News!

Wonder if Dragon will go for 1/6th German Panther tank or a Marder in nearest future?

ALL INFIDELS MUST REPENT!!!!
WOW!
Number one in my non German wish list!!
I know I'm in the minority, but I would have loved a pre-built model...

Ok now down to the serious stuff, before I get dizzy once again trying to figure out the Sherman types reading the Sherman Bible, would the 75mm turret of the earlier release, on this main body be a representation of a M4 Composite?

And IIRC that would be a type used in Normandy By Commonwealth and US armored formations? I know the M4A3 was a stretch for Normandy an a US only type...

Que siga la fiesta!

Well will you look at that. Dragon hasn't given up the ghost, they've just gone ahead and given what a lot of folks have been asking for for ages. This is really nice to see. This is really excellent news.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

The answer sheet which the dragon company submitted obtained the passing mark.
A dragon company may only sell a plastic model in a plastic model maker's position.
The dragon company does not need to put finished goods on the market.
A dragon is the result which follows example of the Tamiya model.
Some finished goods may also carry out sale.

Thats a hoot! I was going to chop up a Dragon kit and modify it to a Firefly. Now I'll just wait for this one most likely.(If it doesn't take to long.)

That would be great!

I also noticed the new flyer mentioned that the model now features realist cast texture. They must have noted that everyone is always adding casting once they build.

What are the min differences that would be in this kit from the M4A3? Just the turret?

I am sure they newly designed M4A4 hull for this Firefly. I expect they will release M4A2 for the battle of France.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

"Most Fireflies were adapted from the M4A4 and were known as the Firefly VC (‘C’ denoting the 17pdr gun), while a smaller number were converted from the older M4 type and were called the Firefly IC."
This taken from dragons website this seems to indicate this is an older m4 version suitable for D-day tanks

I understand the M4A4 is a longer chassis, so it is a different animal altogether

I wonder what kind of price tag this will have on it. I think this will be a big seller. I also think you will have to get your preorder in pretty early. I will be getting one for sure. There will be some people who normally don't do 1/6th will be in on this one too in my opinion.

I'm going to have to jump on this bandwagon, I was beginning to regret not getting the first Sherman release (kit) so it looks like holding out has paid off.

Glad to see Dragon still producing these kits in 1/6th. I'm still working on my Sherman now. Hope the decide to dip into some more armor but not to fast. I would like to see them redo some tankers for both with full gear.

The DML pic shows a composite hull. Basically a cast front armor piece grafted to a welded superstructure.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

You cannot fully appreciate these new tanks by Dragon until you hold one. The super detail and very light weight (yet fairly sturdy) are just amazing to behold. There is so little needed to upgrade any of the models released so far, they just need markings and a good paint job & weathering. I have a Viper Sherman and just picked up the 105mm Dragon kit, as did several of my friends here. With this new release I think we will have about 10 Shermans between the 6 of us, 9 of which will have been within the last year (I've had my Viper since they came out in 2003 I think).

I'm really glad Dragon is continuing to give us large vehicles in kit form, it really is the best way to go for both the manufacturer / seller and the collector. I can see Scott Carter (fadedarmour.com) being very busy painting Shermans.

Hopefully Dragon does a Priest and an M10 TD at some point, as well as other much wanted vehicles like the Greyhound, M3 Halftrack, 2 1/2 ton trucks, Dodge WC, Bren carrier, Ferret...and on and on.

Dragon really needs to re-release US & Brit/Commonwealth tanker sets, with mechanic tools and GAS & WATER CANS. I would love to see some radio sets and other detail packages, and of course more AMMO.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

What an awesome announcement. Not only is it another sherman ( which always makes my day ) but it is of a sherman that no one has yet to make in 1/6...Composite hulled M4.

The firefly is cool...and I'm going to get one to make as a firefly. But also with a few tweaks and swaps here and there and you get an American Composite Hulled m4...anyone else get the same idea?

Give it time. Just as I predicted the composite hull variant firefly back when the sherman was first announced I can see a cast hull A1 down the road....followed by the T23 turret variants, Knowing DML they probably will do the M4A3 76 first as they already have the hull and body tooling complete. All that would be needed would be the molds for the turret.

Just as I wrote when these tanks were first announced the version of the sherman that they picked is ideal in that they can do just about every short hulled sherman type with their lower hull tub, with just a swap of the upper hull / turret combo. The short hulled sherman body makes up about 90% of the sherman family, including the M3 Lee.

The only version that DML can't do with their lower hull are the long hulled tanks like the M4A4, and M4A6. The A4 was a common commonwealth tank as was fairly prolific, while the A6 on the other hand was a limited production / prototype vehicle with about 70 units produced and as far as I know none saw combat.

Finally another prediction that I see in my crystal ball is that I'm going to need ALOT more room lol

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I have been wondering about tge same thing John!
I look forward to the details. Would it be as simple as the earlier turret (M4A3) on the hybrid chassis? And would it be ok for a D Day Sherman iN US /UK service?
Or would it require making adjustments to the Firefly turret?

Was the M4A3 75mm turret and the 105mm turret basically the same outside of the mantlet and gun?

I love the look of the early Shermans... That image you posted, is it from a 1/35 kit?

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Eduardo, first to answer your question The 105 turret and the 75 turret are one in the same. At the factory to transform the turret from 75mm to the 105 turret, the mods that werre made were the following.... an extra air intake welded to the rear bustle, retracting elevated shorty pintle mount added (Later versions with single hatch copula), and 105 gun mantlet / gun combo fitted.

Also the turret on the M4A3 kit will work on the new composite hull tank with no needed work...Just drop it on and your done.

To backdate and transform the firefly turret to US sherman early single hatch turret specs, you will need to plug over the square loader's hatch and not use the british specific parts (brit antenna base, counter weight box, and radio box / counterweight box). you will also need a new mantlet and 75mm gun...ironically if you built the last sherman kit as a 105 tank, then you have the spare 75mm runner parts on hand.

All you would have to do is to simply swap out the 17 pounder gun parts with the 75mm gun parts from the last kit.

The most amount of work is to fabricate the missing M1919 MG well that was platted over for use on the firefly.

As for the pic I photoshopped the image using the 1/6 firefly pic from dragonUSA. It's was not very hard to do like the conversion to the kit.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Thanks a lot John!
I had passed on the 105 kit, but think I might pick one up now.
Great job on the photoshop! I thought it was PS, because of the tank angle, but it still looks fantastic.
I saw in another forum that the M4 Hybrid did not arrive to Normandy front until later(August?), is there a particular reference that gives unit/ Sherman type information?
Thanks again!

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Nice release! I picked up the 105 kit already and have yet to start on that, but was also working on a sherman firefly a few years ago. I have the basic hull (M4A4) put together but kind of got dismayed on having to build the turret using the desimone one as a starting point. I could really use that turret (and turret components) from this kit. If I knew someone who wanted the hull and running gear but not the turret, I would purchase that from them.

Someone from another forum told me that the price will be $500.

I am not sure if that was a completely built offering or in kit form .

I would think completely built.

I will have to get this one.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I spoke to a retailer today in St.Louis that sells lots of models. He told me that he is sure this is already assembled. He told me this thing will retail over $500. He thought that was very high for a kit. I am going to get one anyway. He also thought there would be variations off this hull and eventually a kit will be offered with this hull.

Thanks for checking scraper00.

It is pretty clear on the DML USA site that there will be a kit released. The DML model number is in the model kit range not the pre-assembled range and the site specifically calls out that it is a "model kit"

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I just saw on the Monkey Depot site that this is a kit. I stand corrected. Probably a good thing this is a kit. Assembled this would really be expensive.
This is still pretty cool. A german tank of some size could be pretty expensive if they decide to produce one. I would probably try to buy it anyway.

I tell you $500 for a kit is kind of high. You could buy the 105 Howitzer all day long for $350. I think that $500 is just too much.

But I may just have to get one anyway.

Here it is on pre-order from Monkey D.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I don't find it expensive at all. A Tamiya static 1/16 Tiger I or King Tiger goes for about $400... That Tamiya kit could fit comfortably inside this kit!
The Sherman 105mm kit is $350 now, or less, I think it came out a bit higher.
I for one prefer a pre-built model as I over-paint, weather and detail the pre-built and it saves a lot of time building the kit.
Time is money and a pre-built probably saves me at least 2-3 weeks of work...
But it looks like kits are what is going to be produced, so kits it is for the Firefly!

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Looks great, may have to get one.
Hopefully they will be quiet and sneaky and punch out a German tank in a while, A panzer IV would be awesome.
Found it interesting that there was no prior knowledge on this Sherman coming out.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I agree Eduardo. $500 for a complete kit of a Firefly, with running gear et all... seems like a bargain.

The 105 was a very cheap kit conversion to the original Sherman for DML to make and understandably not a big bump in price as the Firefly.

If you sit back and think of what you are getting it is nearly unbelievable even at $500.

But it looks like kits are what is going to be produced, so kits it is for the Firefly!
hear, hear. i concour! wished it was pre-built!

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

I just got the 105 kit and have worked on a few of the original Shermans as well. I can't think that these kits should be too hard to put together and if it means I don't have to break apart glued hatches and fix other little pieces than I am all for the kits. If you would have told me just a few years ago that $500 dollars tanks would be available I would have just giggled at the notion. Keep it up Dragon and this will be the beginning of the golden age of 1/6 vehicles. I will be getting the Firefly as well and this version of the Sherman will give me a tank from all of the major players in Europe. Now I need to build a bigger garage to store all of these monsters.

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

8 years ago I would be all over this. I will have to think long and hard about this one. Even if I get the kit only to put it away for a while. I haven't done much with 1/6 lately, but I did just get the DML SAS gun jeep and the new RAF pilot. Got that old feeling again opening the pilot, the bx reminded me of the great 21C days.

I have not built a kit in ages, this might be a nice piece to begin again with.

Quite apart from the fact that the Firefly is a great looking kit, it has also had the positive effect of bringing old soldiers out of the wood work! Horsa, Jon - good to "see" you guys again!

Re: Dragon Models USA announced 1/6 Sherman Firefly kit!

Great to see another Dragon tank kit. A firefly would be a great addition. A little steep on the price though. I can't see how its worth $150 more than the Sherman. Hopefully prices will come down. Looks like Monkey Depot is more reasonable.
Cool addition, I look forward to seeing some builds.
