Stug III Ausf A

This is my new build. I have always liked these AFV's with the short barrel so I have decided to build one. I will be putting panzerwerk running gear on it. I started about two weeks ago and it is coming along very nice. I'm using the paper model planes on this one also.

Will be keeping an eye on this build as well Billy, I've been a fan of the Stug's ever since I read the book "7000 km in a Sturmgeschutz", a great war time diary of knight cross winner "Heinrich Engl".

If you've never read it, it's a cool read with a ton of pictures that Heinrich took during the war. He saw a lot of action, and fought from the invasion of France, the invasion of Russia, and spent the rest of the war fighting on the eastern front until the end of hostilities surviving the war.

The build looks like it's of to a grand start, and I'm sure with your talent this will be quite the piece to watch evolve

Great stuff GB! This is a vehicle that has been on my wish list for some time. We were actually talking about it today when a few of us got together. I really want to do this tank someday so I will be watching this post closely.

What paper model did you use to scale up from?

What kind of glue you used to paste the parts? This material is PVC?

Hi Bill

Nice start. Like the others, I'm looking forward to watching this project! I always wanted a StuG III and still do.

I also second Pangaea95's book suggestion. It's an excellent account of life as a StuG commander.

Regards
Tim

Looking great.
Love these early StugIII and went through a lot of trouble ane expense to get one from Spain. But it is a wonderful and versatile piece of armour.
Your's is off to a flying start!

I agree it looks like a great start. Without the fenders it looks so narrow.
You have lots of work ahead of you but it will be worth it.

Yes without the fenders it does look too narrow and too tall as well but I think once the fenders are added it will start to look correct

Here are some updated pictures on the Stug. As you can see by adding the fenders the Stug looks fat. I also did the work on the vision port for the sight. Will be building the gun and a ton of detailing. The panzerwerk running gear is awsome.

Gun

I built the gun today and turned the barrel on my lathe. I need to do a little adjusting on the gun itself. It needs to be move back a little and the shield moved forward. Also intallled the diamond plate to the fender tops and installed to spare wheel brackets.

Grüß Di' Billy,

Nice work! My only concern is that the hull and superstructure look too narrow from all the plans and reference material that I have for the StuG III. If you need some scans, please let me know.

Horrido!

I have seen this also and Steve at panzerwerk thinks is my camera. I have checked all the measurements and it is right where it should be. Steve let me borrow his Pz III and mine is the same size. I will post what I have and we will see. Just did some quick measurements and here is what I have width fender wide 40cm, hull top 32cm, length 91cm, from bottom of hull to top 62cm. these are not exact, but very close. Let me know as that is why I post to find out if there is a problem.
Thanks, GB

Thanks Bob, Steve has let me borrow his Panzer III hull which is the same width as the Stug. So all the measurements were taken from it. Like Steve has told me he thinks it is the camera. I need to change my settings when I'm up close as it makes everything look way short and tall.

Hi Bill

I think it's deceiving in the photos without the running gear and tracks. In my very humble opinion though, I think your gun is still sitting a bit low. But you are the one with the measurements.

I can't wait to see more!

Sturmgeschutz III Ausf.B - Winter 1942 by Marko Skukan

and here's a good view of the gun height when in level position. i know this is an Ausf B and I'm not sure if they were different or not. If so, just ignore my whole post.

kind regards
Tim

Running Gear

We were off today so worked on the StuG. I did a little adjusting on the gun. Tim let me know if it looks better. Also did some work on the runnig gear. It will set about 10mm higher when the road wheel suspension is built and installed. Used a different setting on the camera so will see what happens,

I take it the suspension isn't fixed in place yet as it looks like it's sitting way too low the drive sprocket is amost touching the ground. A nice build though. looks good love to see it when it's done.... keep up the great work

What' up with your camera? That lost shot with the figure is showing a lot of vertical distortion.

Looks terrific BTW I'd kill to have an early Stug in the collection.

Running Gear Installed.

Spent the last 3 days building the running gear small parts. That was a lot of fun for something you barely see. But it was worth it. I took some picture of it along side panzerwerks BergePanzer III to show the size. Will start detailing the top and all the small stuff next. The hard part is over.

Another day OFF and some more updates

Had the day off again and desided to finish off the top and all the hinges and the front lights. It really looks like a Stug now. Panzerwerk hinges are really nice to work with and add a lot to the look. Thanks Steve for your great work.

Stug is looking very good Bill.

Congratulations on the M1. That's on the top of my "next must have" list. Although I'm looking for a 1943 or 44. Your toy room must be a treasure trove!

The PzrIII hull and the StugIII huls are basically exactly the same as for length width etc, same applies for the PzrIV and the StugIV. They used the chassis. the rear hatches and loovers may be slightly different

Randy, just received the book today and all my missing where does it go what does it look like are there. Thanks for the heads up and I can already see this is going to be a Great read.
Thanks, GB

I've been watching this project grow. Very impressive (as always). I've never been a big fan of the Stug series of tanks, but your's has definetly caught my eye. Might even have changed my opinion about the Stug III's.

Nicely done.

I like the StugIII's my choices would be the F8 or the G without the saukauf mantlet. If it wasn't for the track, sprockets, idlers, and road wheels being so expensive I'd be scratchbuilding one in a heartbeat

Stug ready for paint

Finished up all the detailing this weekend and am very happy with this project. Will be putting the Gray on next weekend and then weather it in the coming weeks.

Wow,looks great! I cannot believe you made it from scratch. Wish someone would make a kit like DML has been doing with thier vehicles as this is one of my fav AFV.
One question, didn't these have a MG mounted on top?

The MG was not mounted on the Stug until the G model.

I have seen pics of early stugs with an mg on top but was justa regular mg with bi-pod, probably something the crew decided to add

StuG. III Ausf. B finished and ready for Battle.

First I would like to thank panzerwerk, Steve for the running gear , toyriffic, Mike for the tool set. Armorpax, Dave for the stencil set. Without these guys buillds like this would be impossible. I'm going to assign this StuG to Michael Wittmann for Barbarossa. The paint was mixed at Home Depot. The weathering under was with model railroad powders and dirts. I will be building a nice crew up for her as the weeks go buy. Hope she meets your liking.

I only used 1 can of dullcoat, I used the color from one of DMLs jerry cans as the Grey. I had looked at all kinds of grey and some were to light and some way to dark for my taste. I will still be working on the tracks and also some more weathering to the upper hull. The paint I use is Behr interior flat and a quart is less that $10.00 and two cans of dullcoat over 10$.

Finished up the weathering and the detailing. Named it BUSSARD after Michael Wittmanns Stug. Still need to build up a crew. Am going to build a storage rack for the bacck so I can pile junk all over it.

Beautyfull job GB and I am glad to see another Michael Wittmann fan out there!
Never seen anyone do his Stug as his early career seems to be overlooked by most people.
Once again,I love your Stug, you have really done a first rate job.

I shamefully just got through this thread from start to finish for the first time this morning. Congrats on a beautiful build. The end result from the work in progress flow and the nice feedback from the folks made this most enjoyable.

Crew and Supplies

Built up the crew and added some supplies to the Stug. Waiting on some shoulder straps and a couple of medals. It is now ready for combat.

I like the fact that the commander and the shooter in the cupola area look natural. Most figures have a tendancy to lean back and look unnatural when in that area. Very nice indeed!
