Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

G'day all...

Here are some first views (she's not quite complete yet) of one of the centre features of the 'BLITZKRIEG' diorama - a Krupp Protze light truck fitted out as a mobile field kitchen (given the 7th Panzer Division was motorised). Such was the extent of equipping the Panzer and motorised divisions that many trucks were modified so that the logistical services were able to keep up with the armoured components though the Wehrmacht, throughout the war, suffered from a shortage of trucks. The Opel Blitz and Krupp Protze were the main carriers of the Gulaschkanone in these units (the traditional foot sloggers got by with the horse-drawn variant). Fitted out as best they could to keep the frontline units fed with the promise of at least one hot meal per day, many field cooks set up their vehicles to suit their requirements.
For those that are familiar with TAOWAN's Protze, then you'd know that they are 'bare-bones' out of the box (much like their other vehicle models) so a few scratch-built mods were added.
More pics to follow during the week...enjoy...
Steve

Re: Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

Forgot to add...the field kitchen is DML's heavy resin type (from around 2005 I seem to recall). the undercarriage could not take the strain and buckled in places over time so I removed the undercarriage sections and mounted it on a frame in the back of the truck (she's not permanently in-place yet). The ash pans were removed, detailed (with actual ashes) and placed back-on with chains added. On the floor is an ash tray which was used when the pans were emptied of their ashes. The side pantry was used to store tinned food, little containers of what-have-you and other small items. Various other bits and pieces have been added to kitchen area (and more will be added upon completion including two more field cooks). The driver's cabin was also further detailed in order to make it look more 'Protze'.
Enjoy...Steve

Re: Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

Fantastic job on the field kitchen.
I wanted to something similar but did not want to use my Callanta Protze as a kitchen only...
I have the kitchen since way back then, and still not sure what I will do with it.
I once saw a 1/35 RSO with the field kitchen on the rear... Have always had that inage in the back if my mind... I have a 3 in 1 RSO, with plain rear bed, canvas top and AA w/Flak 38, could esdily make a remivable field kitchen piece... But the horse drawn set up is also very tempting...
Outstanding combination you are creating!

Re: Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

Cheers for the kind comments fellas...

I've pretty much completed the vehicle today save for several minor detailing jobs and I'm more than happy with how the final product looks (hard to believe that it's bigger than a Panzer II).
The Gulaschkanone was also given its last few details today and installed into the rear tray. I mentioned that the DML version had buckled under the weight. I had the kitchen set up with limber and, over a few weeks, I noticed that the road wheels had bowed inwards at the top so, upon inspection of the cause, I noticed a fracture in the undercarriage...whether or not this was caused by the weight of the kitchen (as its a pretty solid piece) or just a manufacturing flaw I've no idea (has anyone else had this issue???).
Much like your idea Eduardo, I had intended to put some horses with it but I've now got an all-metal (lighter) field kitchen which I'll use for that scene.
Tomorrow I'll add the cooks and soldiers lining-up and she should be good to go. On the weekend of the diorama, the metal pot in the kitchen will have beef cup=o=soup in it for detail.

Enjoy...Steve

Re: Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

Love the kitchen in the back of the truck. I borrowed a DML kitchen from a buddy and just copied it with wood and what not. Came out O.K. so I understand the weight issue you speak of. Poly stone just sucks when it comes to this bigger stuff, too heavy with out any strength to it. I always like adding a kitchen to a dio as it shows a better rendition of life out in the field. Looking forward to seeing this dio come together.

Re: Project 'BLITZKRIEG'- Krupp Protze field kitchen

Here's some final pics of the Protze. When the diorama is set-up, the Protze will be accompanied by a food preparation area (featuring another field cook, food and the like), coffee point and the 'spud peelers' vignette so this aspect of the Project will be sizeable in itself.

As for the polystone field kitchen, I'm glad that I can finally use it given the damage it sustained over time. I have another polystone model that'll be part of this diorama (a Zundapp KS750 - one of three motorcycles to be used - the other two being metal).
Next job is to complete Panzer '724'...this one will have sustained battle damage so a bit more work (and imagination) required when compared to the other three Panzer IIB's.
Enjoy...and thanks again for the comments...much appreciated...
