Albert Ross Mini Photo Review
-----------------------------------
Much has been said about this figure already, I'm more of German fan but I can't resist a well done figure regardless of era or nationallity. I'd wager if such a vote were being taken, this figure would win "Figure of the Year". A few comments; I think DiD has done an excellent job in selecting textiles for this figure and it shows what I believe is the state of the art for the items in this set. Anyway here are a few pics, I did add a set of the superlative NewLine Miniatures Corcorans to the figure in Class A's.

Please note that I did cut the handle on the e-tool short, this can be seen in the rear view of the picture of the figure in jump uni. It took about ...30 seconds to fix.

Great looking suff Sixty. Was there enough parts to make 2 complete figs? The NLM boots look killer as always. Nice looking fig for sure, thanks for the photo review. He really looks like "The Fig" to own for A/B enthusiasts.

Does the "Ross" Name Tag come off or does the owner have the option of not applying it? Would be great so there would be less clean up for kitbashers.

Ross name tag comes off. Its the same style of patch that they use. Cloth with a sticky glue on the back. The GP bag is great and as I have seen discussed on the board size and scale I am not an expert. I will say that it wont fit a DiD puller .30 cal ammo can. It might fit the DML version though. E tool as stated was a tad on the long side. In the past with other figures released I think it was the Winston figure I had issues getting the hooks into the eyelets on the belts. This one while still a pain in the ass was slightly easier. Both uniforms are fantastic although like some previous releases they only included one dress shirt and tie so if you want to make two figures hit the Etailers for another shirt and tie. Thats about it from me, I am sure someone will elaborate or add to this in the very near future. thanks for taking the time

So - add shirt & tie, boots and another nude(about $15) and you have two top-notch figures for less than $80...! :!:

Just one thing about the garrison cap - shouldn't it have the officers gold/black piping? Certainly, it shouldn't be white - I thought all infantry used blue piping?

edit: forgot to say, thanks for the review! 8)

Hi,

Many thanks for the review.

I see the shirt does not have any insignia on the collar, this i can fix with a Dragon shirt i have.
I just wish i had another one though, as i can't remember what figure the shirt came with.

I can't wait to get my hands on this figure, because that Class A uniform is one i have been after for ages.

Hey Sixty, did you notice the very edge of the M42 pant legs? It has a two tone part near the ankle that looks like it's supposed to be folded in when bloused in the boot (I'll have to post some pics). I have never seen that before.

I didn't notice 2 tone pant legs, probably because I didn't take the boots off yet.

FYI to get 2 figs for one, all I did was add 1 headless nude and a pair of boots. Pretty cool concept if you ask me, hopefully the upcoming BEF Officer will be the same way. Not sure if I mentioned this already or if it's common knowledge but this figure also comes with 3 sets of hands. A left and right hand clenched with the index finger pointing, and alternative grips on the other 2 pair. Also, the hands have some paint ops, this is the first fig I've purchased with painted hands. I still have 2 A2 flight jackets, 1 set of hands and a cloth pistol belt leftover! Personally I like getting fewer high quality figures at a higher price than the "average" boxed figure, especially when the set is packed with useful items that are high quality. Beats the heck out of oddly and lightly equipped figures with rubber boots and pistol belts.

I noticed that with the hands too. Just wasnt sure if this was a new thing or not because I have only bought the DiD Merrill figure and he had the bendy hands so I didnt mention it. Yes I noticed the pants near the ankles had two tone colors too but since I bloused over the boots I didnt think anything of it. I just want to know if anyone else had problems with the belts or is it just me and on an odd note if you look at the picture on the front of the box of Ross wearing his M42 his cartridge belt isnt hooked.

DiD has done a killer job on their new hands. Albert Hadler had the same paint applicaiton on the heands. One the hands I have there is some red pigment applied and until my wife confirmed it, there is also what appears to be a tinge of blue added to the veiny areas. I originally thought my eyes were playing tricks on me until my wife made a comment about the very light hint of color in the veins.

All and all a good figure. I am pleased with my purchase. My only nit picks, I would have liked the original para helmet they had better. My biggest complaint is none of the manufactures can do the M 36 suspenders correctly. The piping is wrong on the garrison cap, but easy enough to fix. [B]

I should be getting both versions of this figure this week. I'm not an Airborne specialist, but, is the musette bag too big?

mussette bag seems big to me but Im not sure if it is really oversized or just flat with nothing in it making it look larger.

Yes, the mussette bag is a little large, but it IS the best made in my opinion. It may be slightly out of scale but with a little work it can be king. The lift the dots must go as these were not correct they need to be replaced with solid metal buttons. It is a stud type button... I already have come up with a solution for this using pin heads, the trick it to find pin heads for the scale. The average sewing pin is too small. It needs to be slightly bigger. I will do a post on this when I get one finished.

No rank or branch insignia are included on the shirt. Did officers wear these on their shirts with the dress uniform back then?

Mine is in, a thrilling figure, the uniforms are awesome -

My area of expertise is US gear, and there are some interesting findings. First, the mussette, which looks way too big, is actually spot on. The "Lift the dots" have to go. though, in favor of buttons.

Next, the GP Bag - "BUZZZ" another real scale miss. From the front it looks like the copied the (dreadful) size of the Dragon GP bag - WAY too small. The depth is better but there's still no way to get an ammo can in. I took a picture of the DiD, the DML and a recent "HankCo1942" effort. The HankCo1942 bag (which I know is correctly sized) has a DiD ammo can inside., The other ones, well, don't.

The shovel handle is way too long, and the mechanism isn't quite right.

So, enough griping, the overall figure really is great. More soon

Wow, those are at least 1/3 smaller than your GP Ammo bag (which is to scale). Let us know when you start offering yours, Hank!

I agree on the mussette bag, it's roughly the same size as the Garrett White bag, and the closure straps are more correctly located compared to DML's best effort....just need to remove those lift-the-dots.

I was able to squeeze a Did .30 cal ammo box into my GP bag.....a tight fit, but it's in there! I guesstimate that the bag is roughly 95% the size it should be.

LOL I'd love to see an ammo can in one of those bags. There's absolutely no chance of it with mine. Maybe someone has conspired to send me the smallest bag of each run!!!

NEWS FLASH!!!

Eating my own words - I did manage to get a can into the DiD bag. TIGHT FIT is putting it mildly, but the girth is enough to go around the edge, it still is about 3-4 scale inches short and won't close properly, but, hey, it "is" in there...

Sorry!!!
http://members.aol.com/hankband/didgp3.jpg

A couple of more notes - If you look at my earlier post you can see that the DiD bag has a much better shape to the upper flap than the DML - the DML was also too shallow, so I couldn't even start to get the can in. In real life the bag was BIGGER than the can, the can slips in easily. Must say that I hate the DiD buckle though, too clunky, I would replace with an Armorpax. The DiD also has awesome edging, it is bias tape instead of out of scale strapping.

Hi,

No rank or branch insignia are included on the shirt. Did officers wear these on their shirts with the dress uniform back then?

I have seen pictures of officers wearing shirts both with and without the insignia.
What has me wondering about the shirt is, that on the DiD site it shows on the top picture a shirt with the insignia.
But on the one under it, it shows the shirt without it on.
So i am wondering if this was another bonus for getting the Expo version?
