Hi,
Please pardon me asking more questions about the Hermann Stahlschmidt figure. But i am wondering about the shoulder boards that came with the figure, because i am wondering if they are too short?
As when i tried to test fit the 'Y' strap for the radio, it dropped down in front of the bolt. Which to me is more of a 'natural lay' of the straps, but if i put it under the shoulder board, it just looks awkward and it bunches the smock up. Also the radio seems to sit too high on the back, and the front connections for the 'Y' strap will have to be adjusted to almost the end.
Sorry for all the questions, but i am wondering what is the right 'lay' of the straps?
Under the shoulder boards or in front of the bolt?

Ok, if I remember correctly, Signals troops have yellow shoulder boards and straps always go over the boards, never under. _________________ Brad

Not all signals troops wore yellow waffenfarbe, just like not all medical troops wore blue, not all pioniers wore black, and not all antitank wore pink.
Waffenfarbe was determined by your parent unit's designation, not your individual job within that unit.
Hermann would only wear Signals waffenfarbe if he were a member of a dedicated Signals company, regiment, or battalion (and sometimes platoon in certain cases, i.e. an attached independant Zug). Signals troops that were members of other units, such as a Gebirgsjager-Battalion, Panzer Regiment, or Infantry Kompanie, would wear the waffenfarbe of their parent unit.
In this case, Hermann is supposed to represent a radioman in a Gebirgs-Kompanie, Gebirgsjager Battalion, or Gebirgs-Regiment, and therefore wears green. Or he could be a radioman in a Gebirgs-Division HQ, in which case he would also wear green Gebirgsjager waffenfarbe. |

Servus Gary,
If you look at the photos of the radio that I posted in your other post, you will see that the straps that go to the radio are specifically designed for the radio...they are not Y-straps. _________________ Heeresbergführer

If a signaler had white pipeing the blitz would be white as well same for calvary yellow and so on. I have an original signals blitz with a black blitz on it so the matching boards would have black pipeing.
Yes the straps went over the shoulderstraps not under.
As for radio straps they came with long straps or short straps just like the tornisters did. If the radio came with the short straps they hooked onto the Y-straps just like an a-frame did If they had the long straps then the man wouldn't wear Y-straps _________________

The Hermann Stahlschmidt figure was a Gebirgsjager radio operator, which is why his waffenfarbe is green.

Ah Waffenfarb... how you complicate our lives!
On a slightly related note: Don't you just love how Anton from the Signals team set comes with a white blitz and two red blitzes, and yellow shoulder boards?
Thank you DML!
Gary - from the looks of your posts, your figure seems to be coming along nicely! |
