Since the Gewehr 33/40 is based on the VZ-24, I'm wondering if the VZ-24 was issued to any of the GJ formations in lieu of or prior to issue of the 33/40?

Grüß Di' Sixty,

Actually, the Gewehr 33/40 was based on the Czech Karabina vz. 16/33. The vz. 24 was the same size as the Mauser Kar 98k and was the standard rifle for the Czech Army. I know that captured stocks of the vz. 24 were issued but probably only to second and third line troops. After Germany took over the Brno (Brünn) arms factory, the production of the vz. 24 was stopped and they produced the Kar 98k instead. The G33/40 was kept in production and was issued to only Gebirgsjägers and Fallschirmjägers. Though most veterans that I have talked with preferred the Kar 98k. If you have ever live fired both of these weapons you would know why. The G 33/40 has a kick like a MULE and a big muzzle flash.

Muli vor!
