• Pardon the dust while the boys rebuild the site.

The board will be in a state of disarray as I get things sorted out, for a little while at least.

The new incarnation is using Xenforo as the system software. It is much like what we are used to, with a few differences. I will see about making a FAQ to help point out the differences for the members.

One IMPORTANT difference for all of us old timers is that the 'mail' system is replaced with what are called 'conversations'/

There is no 'Inbox' or 'Out box' or 'Sent' folders anymore.

Think of Conversations as private 'threads' or topics that don't exist in a forum, that you start with another member. NOTE: Conversations can include more than one member if you or someone else in the conversaion, likes.
Takes a little getting used to but I am sure you all can get a hang of it.

Only a slightly modified default default Xenforo style is available for now. Once the new SAG style is ready it will be available.

All existing users should be able to login with their usernames and passwords once the site goes up.

If anyone has difficulties logging in please contact me at sixthvanguard@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support and patience. I know it has been a loooong road.

Full marks for DiD's customer service!

I bought one of DiD's samurai figures (Takeda Shingen), and was blown away by the detail when it arrived. Unfortunately, the blade of the katana (long sword) broke, as it was made from some pot metal. I contacted DiD's sales department, and they responded promptly. After I had supplied a photo...

Toys City "Grossdeutschland" Unteroffizier Set rev

Toys City is busy cranking out uniform, weapons and field gear sets, much to the delight of hobbyists looking for good quality items for figure bashes. The TC sets offer stuff that is usually on par or superior to DML items, but there are signs that the R&D team isn't entirely at home with...

    Concord "Waffen-SS in Action" review

Concord #6528 "Waffen-SS in Action" by Gordon Rottman and Ramiro Bujeiro, 2009. This softcover book follows the standard Concord format, numbering 52 pages, some introductory text, and 123 b/w photos with captions, most of them not seen in mainstream books. Four colour plates show Waffen-SS...

    My 10th Anniversary Hans

Feldwebel Hans Leiter, on the road to Moscow, summer of 1941. This is my homage to the figure that marked Dragon’s entry into 1/6th scale. My intent was to present a more or less state-of-the-art version of old Hans, based on Ron Volstad iconic artwork. I acquired a MIB Hans, popped off the...

LAH in Poland 1939 - retouched, removed or covered insignia?

Here's the photo of resting LAH troops in Poland, 1939. It is from the Time-Life book The Reach For Empire, p 159. I have some questions about the insignia worn by the soldiers. I've read that during the invasion of the Low Countries in 1940, SS troops had to remove their collar patches due to...

    DiD Mauser repaint

The colour of DiD's wood and metal Mauser Kar98k looked a bit too bright to me, so I tried to fix that. I disassembled the rifle, sanded the wooden parts with fine grit sand paper, and treated it wth some IKEA wood stain plus some brown ink and a thin layer of varnish. The metal parts were...

    Feldwebel Blau, 101. Jäger-Division, Slovakia April 1945

Feldwebel Jakob Blau, 101. Jäger-Division, Malacky, Slovakia April 1945 A veteran who has survived three years at the front, Feldwebel Jakob Blau is marching westwards, hoping to avoid Soviet captivity. Wearing newly issued Leibermuster camouflage trousers (the 101st was one of the few units...

    13 + 16 = 29? (Three MTO SS bashes)

Here are three Waffen-SS bashes with a Mediterranian Theater of Operations theme. First out is a SS-Schütze from the “Handschar” division, or the 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Handschar" (kroatische Nr. 1), as the full name goes. This unit was composed of Croatian Muslim volunteers with...

C-H's response to DiD and SS: Soviet armoured crewman

So, DML/Cyber-Hobby (predictably) enters the fray with a Soviet armoured crewman. It's basically the previous Dragon release "Volodya Antonovich Bukayev" with some extra gear, headgear and a padded uniform.

    Sturmmann Kohler, Russia, November 1941

SS-Sturmmann Friedrich Kohler, SS-Division “Das Reich”, Russia, November 1941 With no more than 180 km to advance right to the gates of Moscow, SS-Sturmmann Kohler catches the first snowflakes on a nippy morning in early November, 1941. A soldier of the SS-Regiment “Der Führer”, he has spent...

2008 figure releases - the list

On this last day of 2008, I guess it is safe to post this list. I've tried to list all WW2 figures released during 2008, not counting Cyber-Hobby releases (anyone feeling that they can compile a list are welcome to add it). DML release dates can be a bit dodgy, but I believe I've nailed all...

    Military Modelling Model Figures Special

A month ago, Military Modelling published their Model Figures Special #4, a 100-page theme issue with an article by Rob Henden on how to get the best out of DX Europe '06 figure Doug Kay the British tanker. Nine pages with original photos, pics of the tweaked figure, background on the real Kay...

    IJA figure announced by 3R/DiD

Just up at CalTek's 3R page. ...and he looks great. Everything but the sushi knife set by the looks of it. I'm in for one!

    Five Americans

Here are a few US bashes I’ve completed lately. Nothing remarkable in terms of weathering or repaints, just a few more figures for my US shelf. My main theme is the NW ETO, 1944-45, focusing on the 29th Infantry, 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions. D-Day: First out is the excellent...

    New DiD figure: Rommel

Rommel is next up on DiD's preview list. A better likeness than their "Keitel", but not terribly original. The "Black Max" needs a touch of blue and gold... Still, it will probably keep the collectors of WW2 personalities happy.

DML 8th anniversary set: Flakvierling 38

Well, here it is. "Heinrich Achtes" ("Henry the Eight") looks to be Dragon's most interesting release this year. The gun is probably plastic, with some resin parts and metal barrels. Great character HS, better than most seen this year. ..."Henry the Eight"... Hmm... I'm Henry the eighth I am...

    "Totenkopf" rises again!

In 1944, the shortage of suitable SS troops made Himmler go to extreme measures. With the help of Ahnenerbe necromancers, ancient rune magic was successful in raising fallen SS soldiers. SS cemeteries on the Eastern Front were scoured, and about 1,000 dead were reanimated. The toll on the...

    Schütze Milo Bosch, October 1944

This is a bash I’ve wanted to do for some time – just a basic, late-war Landser showing the strain of years at the front. The figure is “Milo”, repainted and looking bleary-eyed after days of enemy artillery barrage and fighter-bomber strafing. The greatcoat is from Battlegear Toys, and worth...

    SS-Oberscharführer, Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, 1936

Otto Bittmann, SS-Oberscharführer, Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, 1936 The menacing look of the SS was calculated, and the striking uniform instilled fear and respect. This SS-Oberscharführer (sergeant 1st class) serves in Hitler’s bodyguard, the Leibstandarte. In a few years, it will be a field...
