• Pardon the dust while the boys rebuild the site.

The board will be in a state of disarray as I get things sorted out, for a little while at least.

The new incarnation is using Xenforo as the system software. It is much like what we are used to, with a few differences. I will see about making a FAQ to help point out the differences for the members.

One IMPORTANT difference for all of us old timers is that the 'mail' system is replaced with what are called 'conversations'/

There is no 'Inbox' or 'Out box' or 'Sent' folders anymore.

Think of Conversations as private 'threads' or topics that don't exist in a forum, that you start with another member. NOTE: Conversations can include more than one member if you or someone else in the conversaion, likes.
Takes a little getting used to but I am sure you all can get a hang of it.

Only a slightly modified default default Xenforo style is available for now. Once the new SAG style is ready it will be available.

All existing users should be able to login with their usernames and passwords once the site goes up.

If anyone has difficulties logging in please contact me at sixthvanguard@gmail.com.

Thank you for your support and patience. I know it has been a loooong road.

What Is This???????????

Members of some of the German divisions, especially the more "elite" ones like the Gebirgs-Divisions, commonly had these charms and tokens either created by local metalsmiths or privately purchased from metalworkers back home. They're unofficial unit awards, sometimes used to commemorate a special occasion, a well respected commanding officer, or an especially hard fought battle. Others just used them as a way of showing pride in their unit. Think of them as the "challenge coins" of their day.

The Wehrmacht Awards forum has plenty of other interesting examples from various mountain units. The various unofficial medals created to commemorate the "Eismeer Front" in northern Norway and Finland seem especially common.

Thanks Rogue,
I had nevr seen one before and had no idea what it was. It's great when I find out something new (to me) about the Gebirgsjagers! :)
Do you know what it was called? I'd like to search for more information on them.
Thanks again,
GJ

Servus Bergkameraden,

As RogueJK said, these were unofficial awards, trinkets, tokens, talismans, etc. I've not come across any official name...just a charm to remember specific battles, competitions, or honor.

They were usually worn hanging from the pocket watch fob, or sometimes from a button on a tunic. Here are a few that I have in my collection:

Thanks for the pictures. These little things are becoming an item of interest for me. Going to be hard to do any research on them without a name tho'.
Any idea what I could write in the Google search window to start my investigations?
