Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Hi everyone,

Well, after a long break from the 1:6th scale world while I focused on other hobbies, I'm back to start in on my next 1:6th scale RC piece of armor. Moving on from Normandy timeframe and into Dec 1944 with this one. : )

This one will be using a Spearhead/blitzkrieg Armor lower hull and running gear as on my Panzer IV but the upper hull and fighting compartment will be scratch-built. At the moment it's in the early planning stages and I'm working on producing the detail parts for the running gear and hull. Hopefully it will go a bit faster then the Panzer IV.

Hoping to step up my paint and weathering game on this one. (fingers crossed)

More soon.

Tim

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Welcome back! This is going to be fun. Not sure if I'm ready to forgive you on going for a post Normandy model, but the L/70 version is just SOOOO amazing! When I got a JadgPz IV a long time ago, I got Mardon L/70 not knowing it was not suitable for Normandy. I eventually made it, making modifications to the earlier version.

Here with your beautiful muzzle brake:

Thanks, Hammer! Good to be working on tank parts again. I do have all my 7,5cm Kwk42 files (as well as all the others) and am planning on some interior detailing, including ammo storage. There will be some more rounds made for this project. Will keep you posted.

Sure you are aware of it, there are a couple of interesting pics of the Jgpz IV half-sunk in the Petit-Spa bridge in the Duel in the Mist vol. 2

December 1944 is a nice time frame for any vehicle :

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Thanks Ostfront. I appreciate it.

Some progress from today.

Doing things differently on this build than I did on my Panzer IV in order to expedite the process. The fighting compartment will be the bulk of the work for me so trying to get the hull bottom wrapped up and start working on the rear and side hulls as soon as I can.

Decided to make bolt heads instead of drilling and adding 72 fasteners through the hulls botton. For some fun, added some accurate numbers to the bolt heads.

Work on the individual bogies begins. Again adding a quick detail piece instead of individual bolts as on my Panzer IV. From the looks of Jagdpanzer reference, they were more like this. Cast lettering will be added next to some of them.

Hull bottom coming together. Some bolts and access panels added and some still to add.

more soon.

Tim

Nothing short of awesome - glad you're doing one of the Kampfgruppe Hansen vehicles! That's my missing link to fully recreating those photos.

Welcome back to the fight, Tim! You've been missed!

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Hull flange(and welds) and return roller bolts added. Basic texturing added to hull sides. Because the Jagdpanzer will not have zimmerit, I also added the bogie backing plates and welds.

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Originally was just going to use the existing fuel doors I had left over from the Panzer IV but decided to go ahead and create the correct, later, bolted style for the Jagdpanzer IV.

Thanks guys

While I plan the front armor piece that needs to be added to the hull, I took a break and created the detail inserts for the forward steel wheels.

Hi Tim
Amazing work as usual. Do you use solid works for the drawings and a 3-D printer for the parts and/or a cnc machine?

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Hi Leonard

All my old stuff was done in Solidworks but I've switched over to Fusion 360 for the past several years because it had better features/capabilities that were tailored better for my actual work stuff. also have been using zbrush for the past 5 years for the same reason. Often a combination of the two.

I have my own SLA machine now so that takes away the delay in 3D creation to actual, physical parts (hours instead of a week, or more). So much faster now and not relying on outside services. Way better!

best
Tim

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Hey Tim
Thanks for the info. Hadn't heard about SLA machines and checked them out on youtube comparison reviews. Seems to be much better machines, with less moving parts and finer detailing. The only downside sounded like some clean up time and fumes. Looks like the units and supplies have become very affordable.

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Next main component to make is the front, top deck. On my Panzer IV, I wanted to make the inspection hatches function but didn't. So on this one they will. : )

Decided to create the front glacis as a 3D part and print it instead of using styrene. Allowed be to design the assembly together.

Top deck

Hoping to have the front glacis etc, attached and completed in a few days. Then I'll finish this piece and its details to install and also finish the rear detailing. really looking forward to the upper hull and fighting compartment on this one. As well as the paint work.

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

on some parts, I'll add texturing before the part is printed. think I can get a rougher "cast" look this way. this will be especially needed on the gun mantle and mantlet.

Final drive service hatches roughed out.

Hatch

Playing around with the idea of doing my own head sculpt for the battalion commander, Hstuf. Karl Rettlinger. Not 100% sure it will be his vehicle but......

Thanks squidley

Rettlinger round two. My first attempt at a likeness sculpt so steep learning curve. Younger looking but Karl Rettlinger has a tiny bit or William DeFoe look to him and I just can't get this there yet.

Still with the smirk on this first one.

Re: Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Project (mid production)

Well today I ended up focusing on the top deck more then assembling the front hull armor.

Here's the assembled and fitted front glacis with texturing. I'll add more cut marks and nicks to it before final primer. The front deck butts up to that top edge and creates a trough where I will add the welds.

Awesome details. Coming along great. I like the Rettlinger V3 figure - definitely looking better (meaner)! Perhaps a little fuller in the face - not so lean looking.

I'm sure you could paint him - you can paint everything else!
