I haven't been able to find exact dimensions, but I have always wanted to turn a Testors rattle can in to a 5 gallon oil drum. According to one web site for code compliant steel 5 gallon closed head pails the diameter is almost the exact scale.

I cut the top out, and replaced it with a 3D print of the pail head and a wire bail handle.

I do still need to tweak my CAD model a bit, the boolean operation to cut the bottom off smooth so it would sit flat on the printer left a portion sticking out, so the print did not come out quite as nice as it should have.



The idea, being mostly metal, is that it can be beat up, scratched and rusted to look fairly realistic. Still working on a stencil for the labeling.

Brilliant, they came out great.
Is this a more modern style 5 gallon drum or were they always this style. What time frame could you use these in, 1940, 1980, ?

The pail I based my model on is dated 1975 and the design is still in use today. I've seen other pails (5 gallon cutting oil) with dates back to '45 or so. Got the image below off ebay:

Still don't have a stencil made, but did re-create my 3D model but with a flat base, and it printed out much nicer!
