My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build... DONE...

Haven't posted anything in a while but I've been plugging away at working on this conversion of the DML Panzer II kit... I've always liked the "F" version so I set out to make my own, making some custom pieces that Steve "Panzerwerk" was nice enough to cast up for me as I plan on building another one later on... I made a basic copula and the front driver vision blocks as well as muffler, smoke grenade box for the rear and few other misc. parts that "Panzerwerks" is offering on site... Granted my stuff isn't super detailed but it looks like what it's supposed to be, for that I'm grateful... I finally got around to mounting most of them and priming the thing even though it's really not assembled... For the photos I just fitted the upper hull, engine deck and turret... I won't fit them permanent until I get around to giving them the final paint coat... The running gear is also primed but not fitted for these photos... So far I'm pleased with how it's coming along although there is still a ways to go... Hope you enjoy them...

Hahahaha, too funny I didn't even notice just grabbed the first handy box lol!!!
Thanks for comments all... It's probably going to get a late war paintjob as I'm going for the "scout" with anything available at the endgame look over early blitz/Afrika theme... Just don't have use for anything pre-1944 looking...

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

Super job Mike!
This is a lot more versatile PzII than the one issued by DML. It also solves the hard to model front of turret pieces for the upgraded earlier type.
Would love to hear if you find some reference of any PzII used late int he war. I iagine there were some, but I have not found any references yet.
In your tank, you have two of the large bins on the fenders, are these from the kit ir did you also do a custom bin for this project?
I'm also planning one of these some day, probably will do it for Russia 41/42, and your parts through Steve will be beyond helpful!

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

No references that I've come across but then not everything that happened was photographed as I'm sure you know... You have to figure later in the war anything that moved would been put to some use so why not a Pz II Scout? I figure it'll go good with my "Luchs" when I get it finished someday...
As for the extra bin, it scratch-built using the kit piece as a base... I basically just laid and traced it on all sides onto 1/16" plastic then cut it out and glued it together... It was very easy to do... I contemplated making the turret bin as well but from what I've seen in most of my WWII German Armor books they weren't as common as I first thought so I just went with the extra side bin...
So far I am content with the way it's looking... I laid all the parts together to photograph my progress. Still haven permanently attached the upper bits or running gear as I'm not quite ready to, still some things to attend to and keeping it un-assembled for the most part helps that... But, so far so good... I'll post more as I continue although sometimes with me, that might be awhile (lol)...

Here's a shot with the forward brackets I made for it with the tracks for the photo...

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

Looks fantastic! Great job on the extra bin. And the spare wheels also look fantastic.
Now that you mention the Lynx, would it make sense to use a DML PzII kit as base for building one or is it so different that it is easier to scratch build?
Keep the images coming!

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

Eduardo, the only thing that's about the same is the size on the "Luchs"... Scratchbuilt is definitely the simpler route as the modifications required wouldn't work on the DML kit as you'd have to pretty much change everything on it...
Thanks again for the comments guys...

Been a bit busy the last few weeks installing flooring (no fun) but did manage to find time to paint my tracks and try them on for size... Still got a bit of a ways to go on this...

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

Well I'm just about done with this little project... Aside from the things I needed to change to make it an Ausf F, I used pretty much all the kit accessories (tools, lights, etc.)...The only thing I didn't do yet is add the jack block on the rear engine deck (hence the two holes you see on the engine access hatches)aside from that it's done...I opted to hand paint all the insignia and left it generic so it could pretty much be used for any Unit... I've never been much for heavy weathering even though it lends to more realism as it's just my personal taste... So that's about it... This was the first project I've actually COMPLETED for myself in over 8 years so it was fun, now back to working on some things I owe other folks although eventually I plan to make a Marder II for myself after I finish my two Panthers and Jagdpanther and.... Well that may be awhile...
Thanks for looking all...

Re: My DML Custom PzKpfw II Ausf F. Build.

Very nice Mike. I just came across some info that Pz II were used in a recon role till the end of the war. The ones that remained and didn't get turned into Marders and such. The germans pretty much didn't have a dedicated aufklarungs panzer. They used the Luchs, the 140/1 and any other light tank they could find. Hitler was obsessed in putting AT or SIG 33 guns on any light tracked vehicle that would carry them.
